Discover Open Road Card overview

Discover Open Road Card (also known as Discover Platinum Gas Card or Discover Gas Cad) is in my opinion one of the best gas cards you can get today. The rebates are really good, you can get gas at almost any station, but the tiered rebate formula is not that good. Read more about all this in the following lines.

Good sides:

  • 5% cashback bonus on gas and auto maintenance payed with your Discover Open Road Card - one of the key points that makes this Discover gas card one of the best gas cards
  • 0% apr for balance transfers for 12 months
  • no annual fee
  • you can double your rebates if you use gift certificates
  • rebates don't expire
  • you can use your Discover Open Road Card almost anywhere (on almost any gas station)

Bad sides:

  • Tiered rebate formula - 5% rebate for $1,200 annual spending on gas and maintenance and after that you get much less rebates (after you spend those $1,200, you get rebates when buying gas and maintenance as if they were "other purchases" which means 0.25% for first $1,500, then 0.50% for next $1,500 in annual spending and finally 1% for more than $3,000 spent)

Some other things it offers:

  • Lovely rewards
  • Already mentioned gift certificates that can double your rebates! (e.g. you get $50 rebates, and you can get gifts worth $100)
  • It is always worth mentioning that 5% rebate relates to gas and maintenance purchases at any station!

Summary

Discover Open Road Card is really good choice and, as said, one of the best gas cards available. It is worth restating that it's also known as Discover Platinum Gas Card or Discover Gas Card, so don't be confused if you see it referred to using these names. With this gas card you get really good rebate, gifts, no annual fee and all the comfort a gas card can give you. The tiered formula is not that good for people that have vehicles that do many miles and consume a lot of fuel. I recommend this card. Good luck!
